Valuing Diversity

To me valuing diversity is not as easy as it seems. Where it may become difficult is when you have to take the position of not only listening to others, but taking into account someone else’s opinions and point of view. When a group is diverse the group has different types of knowledge, skills, and abilities to complete the task at hand (Larson, 2007, p. 414). Even though these things are an advantage, friction can come up between different members because their ways of thinking or ideas may be totally different. What I suggest groups should do to value their diversity is for members to always keep in mind that everyone is different and is entitled to their opinions. Also that everyone thinks different differently, so the way one person may carry out a task can be completely different from the way another group may do so. As the book states, “Communication [is] based on shared meanings among group members, therefore, [diversity] cannot be taken for granted and must be actively pursued”.

  1. Thank you for sharing. I agree that valuing diversity is very difficult. However, with a diverse group there are more skill, talents, opinions and knowledge that are taken into account when completing a group task. With every ups there are some downs, although these are positives for a group a diverse group does have more personalities and attitude to deal with as well, and does cause tension within the group. I think the best way to begin to value diversity is to come into the group with an open mind, and the thought of other opinions and solutions may be possible. I really enjoyed your post. Thank you again for sharing.
