Pressures for Conformity

One concept that I found interesting in this week’s assigned reading was pressures for conformity. This concept talked about how during a group process each member brings to the group their own sets of assumptions and norms. So when it comes to carrying out a task or doing certain jobs, everyone deals or takes care of that situation in their own way. When this is noticed or takes place within the group, that member most of the time experiences “discomfort” or “outright hostility” from the other group members because they appear to be going against a majority’s norms or opinions. But the book states we should look beyond someone’s opinion just because it’s different from your or the groups. We should embrace the diversity in the group, and embrace the diverse ideas that will be brought the group from some it’s members. Also we should try to “overcome pressures for conformity” because that is essential for successful work in diverse groups.
